Etiquette: Forums vs. Commenting
62I'm sure tht anyone surfing the internet has come across people who express their opinions or views in a manner that many deem as inappropriate. In hubpages, for example, there is a common trend that hubbers usually are more positive while commenting on hubpages while forums tend to spark more heated, ill-mannered debates. There a several reasons that the etiquette of others change in each scenario, which include personal work, I scratch your back you scratch mine, and chatting.
When someone comments on a hubpage, it is generally more well-mannered. This is due to, in large token, to hubpage sites being the actual work of another human being and generally not a heated opinion. When comments on hubber's hubpages occur that are meant to be degenerative to another person, it is often due to differing opinions, which the hub may have been written about. Hubs dealing with politics and religion, for example, are topics that spark up a great deal of controversy and can make commenting quite a racket. The content that is being displayed generally is what causes heated debate and words. For example, I've taken part in a poetry forum that not one negative remark intended towards another was said. On the other hand, I've ran across political hubs that cause quite a comment ruckus.
The "I scratch your back, you scratch mine" method of commenting can also attribute to commenting generally being less heated and more well-mannered. By this term, I mean that a hubber comes over to a hubpage and reads it, then generally leaves a comment and hopes that the hubber that he visited will come to one of his hubpages and leave a comment as well. Pushing those little green up arrows and then leaving comments is what helps to build up the hubpages community and so friendliness on actual hubpages are generally more common then forum friendliness.
Finally, chatting on hubpages and forums is quite different. On many hubpages, hubbers will leave comments and end up getting into a flow blown conversation. Forums tend to go a different direction because forums are basically made for input about a certain topic. Etiquette can get quite messy in forums, but it goes with the ends some hubbers are willing to display to express their opinions and beliefs. Bad etiquette happens and people get offended, but it happens everywhere in the world, not just on the internet.
There a several reasons that the etiquette of others change in each scenario which include hubpages being personal work, an "I scratch your back you scratch mine" thought process, and chatting. May we each continue to use our freedom of speech to express ourselves responsibly.

I like to stir it up, hub or forum. Sometimes though on the hubs, people who have an opinion on a subject deny other people's thoughts if it is not agreeable, so I don't bother, but I think the different views are always the best. If they will allow me to be different, I will definitely enter.
Everybody has a right to his or her personal opinion. Expressing our thoughts while observing good manners is still the best way to get attention from others. I love HubPages because you get mood-uplifting comments and encouraging criticisms from fellow hubbers. Thanks for this good hub. :)

Roastedpinebark, thanks for answering my request. Your reasoning makes a lot of sense.
I think also that while, at least in theory, the benefits of reciprocity would apply in the Forums as well as on individual hubpages, there are fewer negative outcomes to ill mannered behavior on the Forums. This is because they are less heavily monitored or moderated. Individual hubbers are more likely to delete offensive comments on hubs they control. Only a gross violation of basic Hubpages rules will get people in trouble in the Forums.
